Wait, we are back!!! We drove through the Black Hills to our new 'home' Friday afternoon. So familiar and yet so new! Brody had been sleeping when we entered the Black Hills and when he woke up he looked out the window and said, "Whoa! This is so cool! Let's look for wildlife!" That pretty much sums up Brody. He loves, loves, loves animals!
Brody was looking for deer, turkeys and buffalo. We had already seen lots of deer and I told him we would probably see turkeys, but maybe not today. And buffalo? In the 7 years that we had been coming in the summer, I had seen them only a few times and from a good distance away. I told him we might see them at some point during the summer, but I wasn't sure.
As we were driving along, I'm sure we saw hundreds of deer. Then we spotted a turkey! We saw lots of them along the road. Brody and Jovie were loving it! We saw pronghorn deer too. Jovie would squeal out whenever she spotted something and Brody would say in his big boy tone, "Whoa! That is so cool!"
Then it happened... We came around a turn and what do you think we saw? Buffalo! About 7 of them, right next to the road!!! We slowed down almost to a stop and watched them as we drove by. I didn't want to stop because we had been driving for 7 1/2 hours already (I had drive 5 1/2 of those) and I was ready to get there! We were very excited to see the buffalo. Further on down the road Brody yelled out, "Buffalo!" There were about 10 of them, again right along the road! We stopped in the road this time and watched them for a short time. One buffalo was staring right back at us. It was about 20 feet away and I was getting a little bit nervous staring down that huge creature, so we drove on.
As we were driving along spying all these animals I was amazed at God's love for us. Here we are, just getting to the place He called us and He showers us with animals! He knows that the kids are excited about them. It was like a welcome gift! Such a blessing!
We made it to the Black Hills Health & Education Center and have been warmly welcomed. They were all a bit surprised at our little car, and a bit more surprised at how much stuff we actually had in it! It has been such a blessing to get here Friday evening and have the Sabbath to meet everyone and spend a quiet day with them. Jovie and I got a much needed nap while Rob and Brody went on a hike with several of the people here. But when we woke up, we took our own little hike and it was great. The weather is beautiful, the place is beautiful and the people are too! Brody and Jovie are not lacking in attention. They are getting plenty of that!
We feel so blessed, and it's only the first day!
